They walked along the beach for miles. For hours, they walked together. They passed by clutches of barnacles, fading away in their shells, and past translucent jellyfish, lying dumbly on the merciless sand. The kelp was green and sometimes red, and the shells were small and the rocks were smaller.
The sun was high in the noonday sky. It wasn't a sunset romance or a sunrise beginning. The light was bright and intrusive, and they couldn't hide out here on a beach so full.
We can't. We shouldn't, he said.
The ladies in floral swimsuits passed them by and a man or two ran by in suits even tighter. Children in sagging, soggy diapers waddled out to greet the ocean with opened arms and delighted squeals. Teenage girls rolled on their spread towels to bake beneath the hot, hot sun oven.
Why not? Why can't we? Tell me what's so bad, he replied.
Portable radios thump-thumped a heavy beat to keep the rhythm of the beach alive in the busy parts. Farther away where the crowds thinned and the two of them came, only the ocean thump-thumped against the rocks to keep the rhythm of the beach alive in all the parts.
What if someone sees? What are we supposed to tell them? he answered.
The sky was expansive and wide, not a cloud in the sky for miles, and the ocean before them was never-ending in its great glory. Sunlight hit the water, sparkled and danced on the waves. The water was cool, soft and gentle when it lapped against the sloping shore.
We don't tell them anything. We don't need to tell them anything, he said.
They had come here at night to hide in the shelter of darkness. To kiss on the beaches, empty and quiet, where wandering hands had found naked chests and naked cocks, naked smiles and naked want. They had come here at night many a time, but never during the day.
I...I don't know.
They had never come together during the day when they could be seen.
I do, he said. I know, Sammy, and you've got to trust me, okay? He smiled, beautiful with the ocean and sky and whole world behind him. You trust me?
Sam smiled, smaller and quieter, but no less happy, and said, I trust you.
Dean took Sam's hand in his own, interlocked their fingers and squeezed, once, hard reassurance that they could do this, and they walked back down the beach, back to the all the people where everyone could see them. They walked back, hand in hand.

Date: 2008-08-07 11:22 pm (UTC)Then Sam and Dean, strolling, wanting. Their 'dark' secret. *g* Dean is brave enough to take Sam's hand--good--but braver to make it okay for Sam to take it back. Yes. Nice.
Just--happy. SamandDean love each other. (the end) ;D

Date: 2008-08-08 10:36 pm (UTC)that just thrilled me. I loved through the whole thing that it made a metaphor of daylight on their faces, and how it turned out.
