Sign that I'm a little bit too obsessed with Supernatural: I go into the music store to pick up a beginner band book for my younger brother and swing by the sheet music section. I leave upset that the store doesn't have any music by AC/DC or Blue Oyster Cult. Hell, I would've settled for some Bad Company, too.

In other news, I've actually read enough fics in the past few days to be able to form a lovely list of recs.

Martyrdom by [personal profile] mellaithwen                    Gen, rated PG-13
AU twist on “Devil’s Trap” where the demon possesses someone else besides John. The ending shocked the hell out of me so much that I gasped out loud. Dark, creepy, and painful fic.
“How many nights have you said that, boy? How many times have you woken up to her screams? Every other night isn’t it? Every other dream that doesn’t foretell of the future, shows you the past over and over and over again, as she blames wholeheartedly always for killing her, Why Sam, Why?...”

AU fic where Sam and Dean face the end of the world. Short, but gorgeous writing. It’s painful, but soft and quiet, and just so damn pretty.
“I wish Dad could see this.” Sam said. He had started swaying slightly; the blood loss was finally getting to him.
“Red always was his favorite color.”

The End of Summer by [profile] mcee                Gen, rated R
Pre-series. Dean visits Stanford to check up on Sam, and instead runs into Jessica. Yes, it’s a Dean/Jess fic, but it’s so good that even if you’re a complete Sam/Jess shipper, you’ve got to check this one out.
"Coffee?" Jess offers brightly by way of greeting when he pads into the kitchen with his boots in one hand. She's sitting on a stool and is all legs and long smooth arms in her tiny shorts and a faded AstroBoy t-shirt. She pushes a steaming mug into his hands with a smile and a freshly scrubbed face; no lipgloss, but Dean leans down to kiss her mouth anyway, the upcurve of it contagious.

Slips and Tangles by [profile] one900                 Slash, unrated by author
Short, but lovely little piece. It has a bit of everything: Thoughtful Sam, humorous moments, and of course, the hot little innuendoes at the end.
“sam’s hands smell of age and faded sunlight, of fingers grasping at yellowed paper and brushing against the threads of loose bindings. books, atlases, dictionaries, newspapers. tiny bits of ink come away on his skin with every flip of a page, dark vowels and consonants on the whorls of his fingertips.”

Samson Went Back to Bed by [profile] endora_taylor                Slash, rated R/NC-17
Sort of an AU off “Devil’s Trap” Follows the days and perhaps weeks after the season finale as if the big unmentionable didn’t happen in those last seconds of the episode. Flows right along from moment to moment as the three Winchesters deal with it all.
“He wakes up when the bed dips to his right. He reaches for the gun he didn’t hide under the pillow, but Sam says, “It’s only me.”

And that’s that.”

Highway Survivalists’ Roadmap by [personal profile] drvsilla                    Slash, rated adult
Once again, a brilliant piece by Dru. Haven’t read it? Do it. There aren’t enough superlatives to fit this fic. Describes the moments of Sam and Dean on the road, but of course, Dru turns ordinary times into ones that are too hot and too beautiful for their own good.
There weren't many places Sam and Dean fit into without question or with the familiar, respectful nods they got in these huge expanse truckers' refuges. They weren't in a big rig but no one scoffed at the Impala; it was also abundantly clear they knew the road and knew the ways of it, the weariness and the displacement and disconnect that miles and miles under your tires brings.”

And for some odd reason, I have the urge to write loads of cute, cuddly kid Sam and Dean fics, although I'm not sure why. Must be all the happy, spring weather getting to me. Maybe I'll actually give into the urge because hey, cute kid Sam and Dean fics are a lot happier to write than all the death fics I've got tugging at me.

Umm, sometimes I read slash but it's mostly not my thing. And then while slash is one thing, I'm not really one for the incest part of the package that comes with this fandom. I prefer angsty brotherly just brothers love to slash. Also, if I do read slash, I prefer it to have a plot and a point, not just gratuitous sex. But yeah, I'd love a few author recs. And just so you know, I'm already aware of M.Marinov, Mellaithwen, P.L.Wynter, and H.T.Marie. I've seen them in your circles of comments. So, yea, a new author or two would be great. It's so hard and tiring to plow through the dredge that is ff.net, the place where people don't spell check and think that they're and "author" if they can plunk out a 100 word not drabble, to find those diamonds in the rough.

Oh, and I haven't watched the finale yet. I know I know, but I'm catching up. ;)

I know what you mean about going through the ff.net stuff. The only one that I've been keeping up with is carocali (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/977963/). Her older stories were badly in need of a beta, but her most recent "Cahokia" (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2808206/1/) is pretty good. It's sort of AU, but it's a good read, and I like her writing style.

Aside from that, authors around here who I'd recommend--aside from the ones you've already gotten, that is--[livejournal.com profile] trollprincess (she does write occasional Wincest, though, but she's pretty good about labeling her fics one way or another), [livejournal.com profile] jwynn (I just went through my memories and noticed her name popping up. One of my all time favorite stories is by her: Ain't Scared of Lightning (http://jwynn.livejournal.com/91820.html).)

Digging through my gen memories here...

Ooh...other authors: [livejournal.com profile] whereupon, [livejournal.com profile] traveller (I know she sometimes writes slash, but again, one of my favorite stories is by her: Someday (Never Comes) (http://traveller.livejournal.com/828299.html)) Um...[livejournal.com profile] lyra_wing and [livejournal.com profile] drvsilla (she does write a lot of slash, but Underneath My Breath (http://drvsilla.livejournal.com/19715.html) is gen, so you're safe there.)

Whew! Okay, that's a lot of HTML links there, so if something looks funny, I apologize. Hope this helps to lead you someplace good. :)
