Taking a break from writing crack fic to pass along some fic recs. Mostly gen, but one Wincest tossed in.

All right...back to the crack. I figure one more crack fic, and then I'll return to writing respectful angst. Promise.

Songfic to “Superman (It’s Not Easy)” for Dean. I’m not usually a big songfic fan—some of the ff.net ones have scarred me for life—but this one really got to me. It’s completely Dean, through and through, and pulled off very well.
“Dean can't feel himself. He stares into his own eyes - mirrored reflections that taunt him. Sometimes he stares so hard his head starts to hurt, the pain crashing against his temples with all the ferocity of a major hangover. He knows it's time to turn away, or let the hot water run long enough to fog the mirror and mask himself.”
We Were Soldiers Once by

Beautiful. It’s poetic in all the right ways and just simply gorgeous. It’s not usual fanfiction because the lyrical style makes it come off as so much more than just a Sam and Dean story, but it’s devastatingly beautiful.
“In the still moonlight, our swords gleamed like Truth dividing darkness. We slashed and sliced, plunged and plundered, a dangerous dance of destruction and release. We carved enemies out of mortal cloaks, freed spirits bound in bodies they once owned. Liberating, conquering and judging in turns, we cleaved the Evil from this world and sent it onward.”

[Post Season Finale ficlet] I’ve read so many post season finale fics, and after awhile, they all begin to sound the same. What I like about this one was that it was different from the others (for reasons you’ll have to read to find out). It’s short, just a “ficlet,” but lovely and powerful in spite of its length.
“Dean doesn't say much to Sam these days, though, and when he does it's all quiet and stilted and full of "Sam" if he calls him by name at all. Sam didn't think he'd ever miss being called "Sammy", but he does.”

Response to the following challenge: What if Sam had never left for college? Excellent imagery and characterizations throughout the piece as layer upon layer of Sam and his life gets peeled away.
“Sometimes, he’ll look in the paper, and see an article toward the middle where the more local stories are…But then he puts the papers down, or he flicks through to the obits and scans each and every one for something suspicious. He reads them all a thousand times, and he never lets his fingers run over the letters. It creeps him out if he knows where to go before his eyes have finished reading.”

I love a good deathfic, and this one fits everything I could want. It’s wonderfully lovely and painful all at the same time. Yes, it’s dark, and yes, it’s a deathfic, but there’s something so good about it.
“As far as the world's concerned, Dean Winchester died in St. Louis. Sam's the only one left to notice his absence. Their father's dead, has been for years, and most of his friends along with him, those gruff men who helped raise Sam and Dean, or tried to. It's just Sam, now, alone in remembering that Dean existed, meant something.”

Date: 2006-06-01 06:05 pm (UTC)Here's a glossary (http://www.subreality.com/glossary/terms.htm) of a lot of fanfic terms. I don't remember if I've pointed it out or not, but it helps me when people start tossing around terms. Hope this helps. :)
