The mist falls on his skin and covers his eyelashes. He blinks and looks out to the mainland with its lights in the distance, bright little flickers jumbled together in a heap of the city’s chaos. Here, the gazebo glows behind him in the night, and the music, so far away now, is a low hum. When he hears the open-mouthed laughter of his brother, loud and uninhibited, he looks over his shoulder and smiles, but does not return. Not just yet.

 

He stands at the shoreline, hands in his pockets and feet in black shoes dotted with sand. His bow tie is hanging limply around his neck, and his top three buttons are undone to expose his necklace. The rain is quickening, warm and gentle, and he wonders what Sam will say when he sees the soaked tuxedo. The thought of Sam’s horrified face makes Dean laugh.

 

He should be going back to be beside his brother on today of all days, but Dean needs this moment of solitude to last a few moments longer. Needs this moment to stand out here in the rain with the island’s floral scents creeping around him on lacey little limbs. Needs to stand with the beach as never-ending blackness around him and listen to the waves as a continuous whisper.

 

Then he hears someone calling his name, and he turns toward the sound, lifting his head away from the ocean. Water falls from his hair into his eyes to blur his vision as the person comes closer.

 

Sam, suit still buttoned and pressed, is jogging down the beach with his coat flapping against his sides. When he reaches Dean, he says nothing for a moment. Only looks at his older brother’s disheveled form, absorbing everything that Dean is not saying. Sam’s hair, twisted dark with the rain, is plastered against his temples.

 

They stand, silent and staring, beside the ocean until Sam steps forward. “I want you there too.”

 

Dean nods. He has never doubted this through their months of plans and preparations for today. It has never been about Sam choosing Dean or her. Not trading one for the other. But now that the day is here and Sam is married with the vows said aloud, the reality is almost too much. “I know,” Dean tells him. “Just needed to think on my own for a bit.”

 

Sam smiles, almost sadly, and looks down at Dean whose eyes catch the light of the party. Out here, away from the bustling guests and overdone frills, Sam feels as though he can finally breathe. His wedding is over, and the reception still going; he managed to survive it all.

 

When he looks up, away from his brother who has been by his side for all these years, he sees a woman, dressed in white, standing on the gazebo steps. Her veil catches in the breeze and billows against her back, but she makes no move to go to Sam and ask why. Ask why his brother had to leave halfway through it all. Ask why her new husband had to go to him. She understands all the reasons.

 

Dean sees her too, sees her waiting without pushing forward to interrupt, and he rests his hand on Sam’s shoulder and squeezes tightly. Reassuring Sam that yes, he understands. Yes, he accepts it, and more than anything, yes, he approves. Sam grins and says something to make Dean laugh at last. Sam’s moving on in his life, but they will always be brothers. First and foremost. Above everything—everyone—else.

 

In the rain Sam and he walk back together, side by side.

I love this! I'm still a bit groggy and can't phrase proper reviews yet, but this is so sweet. I can see all those canon moments where Dean has been such a good brother.

the rain was a beautiful touch my dear

I thought the description of her veil was beautiful, and I love the image of it billowing in the breeze

and I PWN DEAN + RAIN + SHORE + STARING INTO THE DISTANCE

beautiful opening sentence too (see its not all about teh pretty boys) it's a description and you want to read on to see for WHO and its calm because the city lights are in the distance. ah so pretty :)

Isn't it the greatest image ever? (Hee. I'm so happy you appreciate it. Although I have to admit that I stole it from a movie and just sort of improvised for Dean. Because really? Dean in a suit? In the rain? And the shore? It WINS.)

Poor Dean. That's so sad, and yet touching. I just feel for him when he's staring out into space. It might end up like this. It's funny, because I just read this other wedding fic in the Smallville/Batman Begins universe and the author quotes these words at the end:
He had made a promise on the grave of his parents to rid Gotham City of the scum. He had shared his dread with them to accomplish that goal by becoming a bat - a monster in the night. But, had he become the very thing that all monsters become…

… Alone…?



It just made me think that Dean is like Batman. His mother and father died so now he fights the monsters - but he ends up alone, just like them. Sadly ironic.

You know, that's the first time I've ever heard Dean compared to Batman, but it's so true that I'm surprised nobody's drawn that connection before. Unlike Batman, though, Dean does have Sam. But, he is rather alone much like the monsters he fights. That whole thought just makes me sad. Poor Dean.

Something to think about?
As in crossover Dean helps Batman fight demons (which Batman does believe in by the way - he believes in everything and has seen everything, though he ususally needs help to fight the supernatural). And they brood together or lighten each other up?
Or as in Sam forcing Dean into a Batman costume to celebrate Halloween because he so could play the part?
And is the costume of the cool Batman Begins kind or of the Batman Forever stupid rubber nipples variety? Lol.

The idea of Dean and Batman in a fic together is just such a great idea. (And the idea of Dean in one of those Batman Forever costumes with the rubber nipples makes me laugh!) But...I'm not familiar enough to go playing around in the Batman universe. I just like the idea of Dean meeting Batman and then pairing them up to fight together. :)

Such a huge moment here, for both boys, a major change that signals a separation they haven't experienced before. It's appropriate that Dean needs some alone time, because even as Sam's starting a new phase of his life, a phase of both their lives is ending.

I especially liked this:

I've often wondered how they would do a wedding in the canon sense, and out of the two brothers, I see Sam getting married far more easily than Dean. But, I also believe that Sam and Dean have a much stronger bond than most siblings do, so it'd be difficult for both of them. The whole idea is both sad, happy, and of course, complex. It's hard to picture the boys "settling down."

I think it'd definitely be unexpected. But, it just seems like he has such a hard time finding a real partner. One night stands, sure. As far as somebody he can actually get close to? The show hasn't shown us any real possibilities. And as far as Dean's love interests go? Well, that's a whole other mess of thoughts. :)

Hee. Sam's poor wife. "Do you know how much that cost?" That woman is going to have a world of dirty laundry to deal with in her marriage. (And you can bet that Dean will just coincidentally drop by on laundry day "just to see Sam" and dump his clothes on the pile. ;) )

Thats painful to read, it really got to me.

Thats just somehow make it even more painful. How accepting Dean is of Sam leaving, like he knows it's the right thing for Sam and the Sam will be happier in his new life and that's the important thing to Dean.

I think what make this fic so powerful for me is that I could see this a a posible ending for the show after the Demon is dead. Sam getting the dream life he always wanted with an amazing woman. Dean hurting because of it but accepting it anyhow, because they are brothers above all else, even if he doesn't fit right in Sams life anymore.

I'm sorry that it was painful. Truth be told, I really hadn't intended it to be like that. I was aiming for something a little bit more light-hearted than what I usually write.

Sam would only leave Dean for someone who did understand.

Yes, I think this is very true. Now, after all they've been through, I think Sam would want to have someone who could accept Dean and the hunting lifestyle. I think it would be almost a betrayal to Dean if Sam lied to his wife about what Dean's "job" was.

I think what make this fic so powerful for me is that I could see this a a posible ending for the show after the Demon is dead. Sam getting the dream life he always wanted with an amazing woman.

I would love to see both of the boys being happy and "settled down," but I just don't see that going for Dean. I think he's too invested in the hunting world to change to a more "domesticated" life. But, I think Sam could definitely fall in love and move on with his life. *sigh* Poor boys.

Your writing style is beautiful and lyrical... Sam and Dean accepting someone new into the family and into Sam's life is heartbreaking, and you've got a nice sense of acceptance and peace to come. Lovely.

Eeck, I know! I can't wait until season four though. From the little bit of spoilers I've heard, it's going to be one hell of a ride this season.

Yeah, I think there's more potential for Sam finding somebody as opposed to Dean, but geesh, if Sammy goes darkside (not speaking from any spoilers, just my own possible speculation), then that's going to make finding a significant other a bit difficult. ;P Agreed! *shakes fist at Kripke*
